What happens when youth experience traumatic events perpetrated by the people and systems that are meant to protect them? In this workshop, we discuss how complex trauma impacts the brain, body, and behavior of students, with a particular focus on those experiencing homelessness or foster care. We also apply a cultural lens, examining interactions with historical, racial, and intergenerational trauma in a school setting.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to apply trauma-informed practices, including the Attachment-Regulation-Competency (ARC) Framework, when working with students to promote positive interactions and healing after experiencing traumatic events.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

- Define complex trauma, historical trauma, intergenerational trauma, and racial trauma

- Examine the brain-body response to experiencing trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in both students and school staff

- Discuss culture and trauma science in relation to youth experiencing homelessness and foster care

- Review trauma-informed care principles and practices tailored for youth and school staff

- Apply the Attachment-Regulation-Competency (ARC) Framework, when working with students to promote positive interactions and healing after experiencing trauma
